DUBAI // An Indian man, who was arrested for possessing marijuana after he asked an airport inspector where the exit was, will spend 10 years in jail.
Dubai Criminal Court heard that 24-year-old had 1.9kg of the drug.
On the morning of January 11, he arrived at Dubai International Airport from his home country. As he was leaving to head outside, he stopped a Dubai Customs inspector and enquired where the exit was.
“He looked tense, so I asked him for his passport but he wouldn’t hand it to me, therefore I had him wait and got his luggage inspected,” said a 19-year-old Emirati inspector.
The inspector said that the man was searched but nothing untoward was found on him. His bags were also opened but the inspectors could see nothing until the inspector noticed the thickness of the bottom of the bag.
“When I cut open the bottom, he started hitting his face with both hands. It was then when I found the drugs,” said the inspector.
The man was convicted and sentenced to 10 years in jail, to be followed by deportation. He was also fined Dh50,000.
