DUBAI // A man who was caught with six pieces of cake containing marijuana and eight poppy seeds at Dubai International Airport has been sentenced to 10 years in jail.

Customs inspectors found the Iranian man, 23, was carrying six pieces of cake containing 314 grams of marijuana when he arrived on March 31 this year.

When they searched his luggage they found eight poppy seeds.

“The cakes and the seeds were gifts to friends of mine here,” he told Dubai Criminal Court. “I didn’t know the cakes had marijuana in them.” He denied charges of smuggling and possessing drugs but was convicted, sent to jail and fined Dh50,000. He will be deported after serving his term.
