DUBAI // A man was arrested on suspicion of trying to smuggle more than six kilogrammes of heroin, valued at Dh3 million, out of the country.

Anti-narcotics officers arrested S M J on August 26 after searching his flat and a lorry in Al Awir.

Officers found the heroin hidden in a compartment in the backseat of the vehicle.

“They found three bags, one containing 2.2 kilos of heroin, another containing 2.6 kilos, and a third containing 464 grammes, in addition to a carton containing 814g,” said Col Eid Al Thani, director of the anti-narcotics unit.

“He was carrying heroin worth more than Dh3 million.”

South Asian S M J, who is aged 20, married and works for a transportation company in the UAE, admitted to police to smuggling the drugs into the country.

“The suspect said he was tasked by an Asian man living abroad to receive the drugs from people he doesn’t know, so that he can store them and then smuggle them out of the country or promote them within,” Col Al Thani said.

S M J was transferred to public prosecution.
