RAS AL KHAIMAH // An Asian man has been arrested over the fatal stabbing of two brothers, allegedly in a dispute over Dh300.

On Monday afternoon, an argument broke out between two men at RAK's new goat market.

As a crowd grew, traffic police were alerted; minutes later, at 2.30pm, police received a call saying there was a body outside a housing block nearby. Inside the building they found a second body in a bed, in a pool of blood.

Police arrested ME, aged 30, within an hour. He made a full confession, they said.

The two dead men were identified as brothers, 38-year-old MA and 32-year-old MI. It is claimed that MI owed ME Dh300.

"[ME] said he had a financial problem with them and he wanted to solve it his own way," said Major Marwan al Mansoori of the RAK Police.

The suspect allegedly stabbed MA in the neck after a fight over the money and then entered the housing block to kill the younger brother in his sleep, also stabbing him in the neck.

As he left the building, ME allegedly noticed that the elder brother was still alive and stabbed him again in the stomach before fleeing.

Brigadier Abdulla al Hadidi, of the RAK CID, said such crimes were rare, and no logic or reason could justify a person losing their life over money. He added that the police were always on hand to punish anyone who committed an act against the public or property.

Tearful appearance

Chancellor Rachel Reeves set markets on edge as she appeared visibly distraught in parliament on Wednesday.

Legislative setbacks for the government have blown a new hole in the budgetary calculations at a time when the deficit is stubbornly large and the economy is struggling to grow.

She appeared with Keir Starmer on Thursday and the pair embraced, but he had failed to give her his backing as she cried a day earlier.

A spokesman said her upset demeanour was due to a personal matter.
