ABU DHABI // A man who was jailed for an attack which left his roommate brain-dead, will have his case heard again at the Appeals Court.
On March 6, 2013, the man is alleged to have slammed his roommate’s head against an iron bedframe repeatedly.
He was sentenced to five years in prison, fined Dh2,000 and ordered to pay Dh200,000 blood money to the victim’s family.
He appealed the verdict, but the Appeals Court rejected and upheld the lower court’s verdict. Then he raised the case to the Court of Cassation.
The defendant claims that he was convicted of the crime despite contradicting witness statements and argued that the First Instance Court did not appoint him a defence lawyer.
He maintains that he did not carry out the attack.
The Court of Cassation accepts his arguments and has sent the cases back to the Appeals Court to be heard by a new panel.
