ABU DHABI // A man who defamed the country and several government entities also spread false information on the UAE’s laws and state security procedures through his personal Twitter account, a court heard yesterday.

It was also claimed that Emirati O N, 25, who had allegedly referred to previous court procedures and hearings as “a comical theatre”, had communication with members in a secret organisation, part of the Muslim Brotherhood, and of later joining them.

O N, who denied the charges, said what he tweeted was based on his feelings towards his father who had received a 10-year sentence in July last year.

His father was accused of having connections to the Muslim Brotherhood, and collecting donations to support the illegal organisation.

O N said that he had more than 1,000 tweets on Twitter, although he could not remember the content, but he said he did not glorify the Muslim Brotherhood.

“I was merely supporting my father. I didn’t participate or show victory to any sect or party like the Muslim Brotherhood or any other,” O N said.

Judge Mohammed Al Jarah Al Tenaiji questioned O N about devices found in his house.

“A black iPhone 4 was found in your house with information about previous court trials and other illegitimate organisations,” he said.

O N told the judge that the mobile phone did not belong to him.

The trial was adjourned until October 14.
