Man, 54, killed in collision

One person was killed and 19 others injured after the minibus they were travelling in collided with a lorry yesterday morning.

ABU DHABI // One person was killed and 19 others injured after the minibus they were travelling in collided with a lorry yesterday morning. The collision occurred on the road between Ghuwayfat, in Al Gharbia, and Abu Dhabi city. The bus, which had Omani licence plates, was carrying Omani citizens. Twelve of the 19 injured were women. The dead man was identified as GN, 54, an Omani who was seated at the front of the bus.

Police said the accident happened after the bus driver failed to notice the large lorry travelling ahead of him. Capt Mohammed Salem al Shehi, the officer in charge at the scene of the accident, said the injured were taken to Al Mafraq Hospital, 30km from Abu Dhabi. "Drivers are advised to take frequent breaks when driving long distances as soon as they begin to feel fatigued in order to prevent such tragedies from occurring," Capt Shehi said.
