Maid throws herself off balcony after sponsor discovers her affair with driver

Lebanese sponsor found birth-control pills in Filipina's room before maid confessed to having sex with a Pakistani driver.

DUBAI // A maid threw herself from a fourth-floor balcony when her sponsor found out about her sexual relationship with a driver, a court was told on Tuesday.

Filipina Amy Fernando, 27, died instantly but her Pakistani lover, 34-year-old ZN, was charged with having consensual sex with her at the Dubai Court of Misdemeanours.

He was also charged with trespassing into the house of the maid’s sponsor, where he had sex with her.

Prosecutors said that, on September 16 last year, the Lebanese sponsor, HA, 24, discovered birth-control pills in her maid’s possession. When the sponsor confronted her, she at first denied using them before confessing to having an affair with the woman’s driver.

The sponsor called police and told the maid she would be taken into custody. At that point she ran to the balcony and jumped.

The driver was then arrested and, during investigations, he said he started the affair about five months previous.

“We exchanged phone numbers and then she asked me to meet her at her residence in Tecom, where we had sex,” said ZN.

“I noticed that, after a year and a half, her performance started to become bad, so I went to her room to check and found the pills,” said HA.

When the sponsor confronted the maid about the pills, the court heard that HA slapped the maid as she was scared for her child’s safety. It was after this incident that the maid confessed.

ZN was sentenced to two months for consensual sex and to one month for trespassing. He will be deported after completing his jail term.
