DUBAI // A maid stole jewellery worth more than Dh100,000 from her sponsor and hid it in feminine hygiene pads, Dubai Criminal Court heard on Tuesday.

Prosecutors said the Filipina claimed she had stolen the items because she wanted to run away after being allegedly abused by her sponsor.

Records show that the maid had been working for her Egyptian sponsor, A E, 44, since July last year and in March this year she was caught stealing and the police were called.

“When police arrived they found my brother’s watch with the maid, as well as a Nokia phone and two of my shirts and one trousers,” said A E. “When the police asked her if she had taken any other items, she said no.”

However, when the maid, 24-year-old M P, was taken to the police station, the stolen jewellery was found in her bags, hidden inside the hygiene pads. They also found two memory cards, a flash memory and a toolbox that belonged to the sponsor’s ex-husband.

“I leave my valuables in a drawer and since there is no one at the house except my two sons, aged three and five, I didn’t fear that they would be stolen,” said the sponsor.

The maid was not in court to enter a plea and the next hearing will be on June 15.
