DUBAI // A maid is being charged with stealing Dh30,000 from her sponsor, who is a senior police officer.
Dubai Criminal Court heard that Emirati policeman MA, 54, hired a new maid in January and, by June 20, the 29-year-old Ethiopian said she did not want to work for the family any more and wished to return to her country.
“We did not mind but when my sister wanted to book her a ticket she noticed the cash in the house was missing,” testified the officer.
He said the maid was questioned but denied knowing anything about the missing money.
However, he found that the maid had recently transferred a sum of Dh9,500 to Ethiopia.
“We asked her to return the money and we would send her home but she refused and also stopped working at the house so I took her to the police station,” said MA.
Although only Dh9,500 could be traced, the maid, FA, was charged with stealing the full amount, which she denied in court.
A verdict is expected on August 12.
