AJMAN // This year’s Liwa Ajman Date Festival will be held starting on July 27, with Dh400,000 in prize money being offered.

The three-day festival will be held at the Emirates Hospitality Centre in Ajman. Local farmers will be able to take place part in the Mazayna contest, which will include date varieties such as Al Nokhba, Al Khallas, Al Kunaizi, Al Barhi, Al Sheshe and Lulu, reported Wam, the state news agency.

A new photograph contest invites people to take pictures of palms and dates in the UAE to enter the competition on Instagram to win prizes.

There will also be a traditional market with heritage products, dates and citrus fruits. Children’s activities and lectures on farming will be on offer, while chefs from the emirate’s hotels will prepare desserts for free tasting.

Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, chairman of Ajman Tourism Development Department, said on Monday morning that the festival is part of efforts to create unique tourism opportunities for residents and visitors.

“We strive to put Ajman as a key destination in the UAE and in the region. The annual event celebrates the culture of the UAE and supports the government of Ajman’s strategic objective which is to promote Ajman as a tourism and investment destination,” Mr Al Nuaimi said.
