DUBAI // A nurse who possessed and consumed amphetamines and then hid the drugs in her underwear as she was being arrested has been sentenced to life in jail.
The Filipino nurse, J L, 34, denied both charges of possessing and consuming drugs when she appeared at Dubai Criminal Court in March.
Her compatriot, R J, 33, who denied a charge of possessing drugs that police say he bought from the nurse for Dh4,500, was also sentenced to life in jail.
Dubai Police’s anti-narcotics department received a tip-off about R J and sent an undercover officer to pose as a buyer.
R J was then arrested near Al Reef mall, in Al Muraqqabat, Deira, after he met and gave drugs to the officer.
“He lifted up his hat, which was the signal for us to move and make the arrest,” said Emirati police lieutenant A A.
R J told police that he had bought the drugs from a nurse who lived in Ajman. The nurse was tracked down and arrested.
“I was among the arresting team – we found her walking near clothes shops on Sheikh Humaid Road. I searched her thoroughly and then found the drugs wrapped in two plastic bags and hidden in her underwear,” said Emirati policewoman H S, 38.
During investigations, the nurse said R J had asked her for drugs but she did not have any so she bought them from a Filipino man and then sold them to R J.
The defendants were fined Dh100,000 each and will be deported after completing their jail terms. The verdict remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
