DUBAI // A man who set up the robbery of a Saudi tourist by a 20-strong gang carrying swords and meat cleavers has been jailed for six months.

Bangladeshi MA, 32, devised a plan and then robbed AA, 36, of 20,000 Saudi riyals (Dh19,585) at midnight on January 23.

The Saudi and his brother were stopped on the street by a man offering them a room for rent, MA.

They went with him to a building where the room was supposedly located.

As they entered an alley, MA left them for a minute and returned with a group of about 20 armed men.

They attacked the victims and then stole the money before the Saudis managed to escape to the street to get help.

Police managed to arrest MA, who had previously been deported four years ago in relation to a criminal case but had returned illegally.

MA denied the charges of armed robbery last month. However, he was found guilty and sentenced to jail, followed by deportation.
