ABU DHABI // For the second year in a row, one of the world's major international sporting award ceremonies is to be held in the capital.
The Laureus World Sports Awards will be held at Emirates Palace hotel on February 7, and will be shown live on television to a worldwide audience.
Leading sportsmen and women will travel to the emirate to salute the world's finest athletes of the year. The winners are selected by the 46 members of the Laureus World Sports Academy, which consists of internationally renowned athletes.
The Laureus Academy chairman and double Olympic 400m hurdle champion, Edwin Moses, said his last visit to the UAE was unforgettable and produced a memorable awards ceremony.
"This is an exciting city with a growing reputation in the sporting world and I am very happy that Laureus can be part of that," Moses said. "The welcome we received last year was warm and we look forward to returning to Abu Dhabi to celebrate another memorable year of sport."
In March, the double Oscar winner Kevin Spacey hosted the award ceremony. The audience included celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Hugh Grant and Clive Owen.
Winners of the 2010 Laureus World Sports Awards included Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt, US tennis champion Serena Williams, British Formula One driver Jenson Button and Belgian tennis player Kim Clijsters.

Normcore explained
Something of a fashion anomaly, normcore is essentially a celebration of the unremarkable. The term was first popularised by an article in New York magazine in 2014 and has been dubbed “ugly”, “bland’ and "anti-style" by fashion writers. It’s hallmarks are comfort, a lack of pretentiousness and neutrality – it is a trend for those who would rather not stand out from the crowd. For the most part, the style is unisex, favouring loose silhouettes, thrift-shop threads, baseball caps and boyish trainers. It is important to note that normcore is not synonymous with cheapness or low quality; there are high-fashion brands, including Parisian label Vetements, that specialise in this style. Embraced by fashion-forward street-style stars around the globe, it’s uptake in the UAE has been relatively slow.

Top tips
Create and maintain a strong bond between yourself and your child, through sensitivity, responsiveness, touch, talk and play. “The bond you have with your kids is the blueprint for the relationships they will have later on in life,” says Dr Sarah Rasmi, a psychologist.
Set a good example. Practise what you preach, so if you want to raise kind children, they need to see you being kind and hear you explaining to them what kindness is. So, “narrate your behaviour”.
Praise the positive rather than focusing on the negative. Catch them when they’re being good and acknowledge it.
Show empathy towards your child’s needs as well as your own. Take care of yourself so that you can be calm, loving and respectful, rather than angry and frustrated.
Be open to communication, goal-setting and problem-solving, says Dr Thoraiya Kanafani. “It is important to recognise that there is a fine line between positive parenting and becoming parents who overanalyse their children and provide more emotional context than what is in the child’s emotional development to understand.”
