DUBAI // A group of Sudanese children in the UAE have joined forces to raise Dh200,000 for those affected by the deadly famine that struck the Horn of Africa.
The money was handed to the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Humanitarian and Charity Establishment, where officials say basic food supplies would immediately be purchased from Kenya and Ethiopia. The goods will then be sent to Somalia.
Several Emirati families also contributed an undisclosed amount for the aid effort, officials said.
Two teams are scheduled to leave for Kenya and Ethiopia in coming days to oversee relief efforts.
The United Nations estimates 750,000 people are facing immanent starvation while some aid agencies are still struggling to reach millions more in hard-to-reach militant-controlled territories, such as those held by Al Shabab.
