DUBAI // Two workers who assaulted a colleague with a metal bar after he reported them for selling bootleg alcohol have each been locked up for three months.

“I’m not guilty,” one of the Indian defendants 54, told Dubai Criminal Court, while his compatriot, 23, failed to show up in court to face a charge of assaulting the Bangladeshi victim, 32, in August last year.

The victim discovered the men had been bootlegging and told his company’s management. Police were informed and the pair were arrested.

“They were released on bail and on February 4 last year I was taken by surprise as I walked out of the company’s accommodations when both men attacked me with a metal bar,” the victim said.

He said that they stopped the assault only when a Pakistani man saw what was happening and came to help.

“The Pakistani man called police who arrived, along with an ambulance,” said the victim, who lost the use of one of his fingers on his left hand in the attack.

The pair will be deported after serving their jail terms.
