Infrared to count beach numbers in Abu Dhabi

ABU DHABI // Infrared sensors have been fitted at Abu Dhabi's Corniche to count beach users.

The technology, the first of its kind in the region, can track visitor numbers by detecting individuals' body heat.

Eight sensors have been fitted along the beach with the aim of helping to improve amenities in the area.

"The municipality will use these figures issued in compiling a renewable database capable of supporting decision-makers as regards improving public services," said Abdullah Nasir Al Junaibi, the director of community services at Abu Dhabi Municipality.

In the first four months of the year more than 1.6 million people visited the Corniche's swimming beach.

The data from the sensors can be retrieved via the internet, Mr Al Junaibi said.

"The eight electronic counting devices deployed all over the beach do not pose any threat or risk to beachgoers as they boast advanced technology, with no emissions prejudicial to the health and safety of individuals or the environment," he said.

The system helps to classify beach sites according to usage and assesses visitor rates during specific periods.

It also identifies the most and least popular visitor attractions allowing priority to be given for maintenance and improvements.

Strait of Hormuz

Fujairah is a crucial hub for fuel storage and is just outside the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route linking Middle East oil producers to markets in Asia, Europe, North America and beyond.

The strait is 33 km wide at its narrowest point, but the shipping lane is just three km wide in either direction. Almost a fifth of oil consumed across the world passes through the strait.

Iran has repeatedly threatened to close the strait, a move that would risk inviting geopolitical and economic turmoil.

Last month, Iran issued a new warning that it would block the strait, if it was prevented from using the waterway following a US decision to end exemptions from sanctions for major Iranian oil importers.

Tax authority targets shisha levy evasion

The Federal Tax Authority will track shisha imports with electronic markers to protect customers and ensure levies have been paid.

Khalid Ali Al Bustani, director of the tax authority, on Sunday said the move is to "prevent tax evasion and support the authority’s tax collection efforts".

The scheme’s first phase, which came into effect on 1st January, 2019, covers all types of imported and domestically produced and distributed cigarettes. As of May 1, importing any type of cigarettes without the digital marks will be prohibited.

He said the latest phase will see imported and locally produced shisha tobacco tracked by the final quarter of this year.

"The FTA also maintains ongoing communication with concerned companies, to help them adapt their systems to meet our requirements and coordinate between all parties involved," he said.

As with cigarettes, shisha was hit with a 100 per cent tax in October 2017, though manufacturers and cafes absorbed some of the costs to prevent prices doubling.
