DUBAI // The manager of an immigration services company has been jailed for a year for stealing more than Dh350,000 from clients.
The Cypriot owner of the company said that on August 16, 2014, he was told that a 50-page receipt book was missing.
“In February last year, a client came to the company and said she paid US$23,000 to the manager and was issued a receipt, which we found out was from the receipt book that went missing in 2014,” said the owner.
He said that when police arrived and confronted the manager, who is from the Dominican Republic, he confessed and repaid the $23,000, or Dh84,467, after which the case was closed.
But two other clients also came forward to report the manager, 42, for services they did not receive.
An Iraqi man said he paid $80,000 to help him and his family obtain passports from the Dominican Republic. A third client said he paid the defendant $20,000 in March last year.
The manager denied the charges in court in August last year but was convicted on Sunday. He was ordered to pay the company Dh21,000 in temporary compensation and Dh500 in lawyer’s fees.
He will be deported after serving his prison term.
