DUBAI // A husband who strangled his wife to death because she was leaving him has had his three year jail sentence upheld by the Dubai Court of Appeal.
Indian S N, 33, denied at the Dubai Criminal and Appeal Courts the premeditated killing of P R. However, he confessed to a charge of consuming alcohol illegally.
“I didn’t mean to kill her, we were fighting because she was cheating on me and was going to leave the house. I didn’t want her to leave, I knew she was leaving to be with another man,” he told the criminal court in November last year.
Prosecutors said that on August 7 last year P R was strangled to death by her husband who then handed himself in to police.
“He came at around 3am and he was drunk, he said he had a fight with his wife because she had an affair and he had a heated argument with her during which he claimed she insulted him so he lost his temper and strangled her,” testified policeman W A, 23.
W A said a patrol went to the defendant’s flat in Al Jafilia and found the woman’s body lying on the bed. Her suitcase was next to the bed.
“He said during investigations that he was home alone drinking alcohol when she returned from work at around 7.30pm. He confronted her about his suspicions and she decided to leave the house,” said W A.
“When the husband tried to stop her from leaving, she insulted him with inappropriate language which infuriated him therefore he threw her to the bed and sat on her chest then strangled her. He said he kept on strangling her for about half an hour,” said W A.
S N was fined Dh2,000 for the alcohol consumption charge. He will be deported after completing his jail term which was upheld by the appeal court on Wednesday.
