UAE residents can sponsor a maid if they have a minimum monthly salary of Dh6,000, or Dh5,000 with accommodation, are married and have all immediate family members under their sponsorship.
The prospective employer must choose a maid through an agency.
The sponsor must then pick up the application form for an entry permit for domestic workers from any typing centre and submit it along with the required documents (see box) to the immigration office in the emirate.
Once granted, the entry permit should be given to the recruitment agency so that the maid can travel to the UAE. The sponsor must then apply for a residency visa within 60 days of the maid's arrival.
Maids from Ethiopia, Sri Lanka or Indonesia are required to take a medical fitness test in their home countries before applying for the visa. Others can take the medical fitness desk in the UAE at any government hospital.
In Abu Dhabi, maids must also have health insurance before they are granted a visa. Daman offers a package for Dh600 a year.
Sponsors should check with the embassy of the maid's countryfor regulations on employee rights, such as minimum wage and medical insurance. Fees include Dh220 for the employment visa/entry permit, a Dh2,000 deposit that is returned when the visa is cancelled and the maid leaves the country, Dh100 for a one-year residency visa, and a Dh5,000 ministry fee for each year of residency.

Tailors and retailers miss out on back-to-school rush
Tailors and retailers across the city said it was an ominous start to what is usually a busy season for sales.
With many parents opting to continue home learning for their children, the usual rush to buy school uniforms was muted this year.
“So far we have taken about 70 to 80 orders for items like shirts and trousers,” said Vikram Attrai, manager at Stallion Bespoke Tailors in Dubai.
“Last year in the same period we had about 200 orders and lots of demand.
“We custom fit uniform pieces and use materials such as cotton, wool and cashmere.
“Depending on size, a white shirt with logo is priced at about Dh100 to Dh150 and shorts, trousers, skirts and dresses cost between Dh150 to Dh250 a piece.”
A spokesman for Threads, a uniform shop based in Times Square Centre Dubai, said customer footfall had slowed down dramatically over the past few months.
“Now parents have the option to keep children doing online learning they don’t need uniforms so it has quietened down.”
