ABU DHABI // The steps to securing health insurance for your domestic worker vary widely by emirate.
In Abu Dhabi, basic health insurance is compulsory by law and subsidised by the Government. To apply, employers must go to Daman with their maid's work permit (or residency visa in the case of renewal) and passport copy, along with their own passport copy, evidence the employer has personal health insurance, and a contract or letter that certifies the maid's salary.
Since the Government subsidises the basic plan, sponsors pay an annual flat fee of Dh600.
If your worker is employed in Dubai or the Northern Emirates, the only option at present is to go through a private insurer.
A spokesman for the Dubai Health Authority said a Dubai health insurance scheme is in its final stages of implementation. Once implemented every person living in the emirate will have access to basic health care in private and public hospitals.
Until then, employers are responsible for their employees.
To apply for a plan at most agencies, a sponsor must submit the maid's passport and visa copy, as well as their own passport and visa copy.
The annual fee payable will depend on a variety of factors, including the package required, the maid's medical history, age and pre-existing conditions.
The health insurer will evaluate the application and quote a premium to the sponsor accordingly. Once the sponsor pays the premium, a health card will be processed.
