ABU DHABI // A housewife who is accused of killing her maid presented a Dh200,000 cheque to the Criminal Court on Thursday, claiming the victim’s heirs had requested blood money instead of a death sentence.
H A, an Emirati, is charged with murdering the Ethiopian by smothering her in a bathroom.
The defendant, however, claimed the maid killed herself by drinking Clorox.
She said the maid, who was often was suicidal and self-harming, had been distraught after learning her contract would be cancelled.
The medical report, however, found the victim’s wounds were not consistent with a suicide.
A policeman, F A, and his brother S A, told the court that at 5.30pm on the day of the murder, they received a call from the defendant’s husband, who was out of the country.
He told them his wife found the maid unconscious and did not know what to do and he asked them to go to the house to help out.
They said H A, who seemed calm when they entered the house, directed them to the bathroom where the maid was lying with numerous injuries on her face.
A verdict will be announced on October 26.
