DUBAI // Consumers in Dubai have complained about a hike in fish prices at the Deira market this month.

Prices of rabbit fish, emperor fish and hammour doubled from Dh100 per kilogram to Dh200, reported Aletihad, the Arabic-language sister paper of The National.

Emirati Ibrahim Al Marzooqi said the Dubai market has become the most expensive in the emirates, though it is worth the price because the fish are fresh.

The increase was caused by a high demand for local species in October, the Dubai Fishermen Cooperative Association said, expecting prices to drop in mid-December.

In Abu Dhabi, prices have dropped because of excessive supply. Fishermen said prices are expected to drop further because of stable weather and absence of obstacles for deep-water fishing.
