ABU DHABI // There are no longer any cases of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, or Mers, in Abu Dhabi hospitals, the emirate’s health authority said on Monday.
And the Ministry of Health confirmed that all hospitals in the UAE were now free of Mers.
The Health Authority Abu Dhabi said there were no positive cases in Abu Dhabi hospitals.
The authority was coordinating with the ministry and other authorities to take all necessary measures as per international standards and recommendations from the World Health Organisation, the state news agency, Wam, reported.
The authority advised the public to follow simple steps to avoid infection, including washing hands often with soap and water or hand sanitiser and covering your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing.
Officials have stressed that residents should listen to information released by the ministry and health authorities. They also said they are closely monitoring the situation to “ensure the public health and safety”.
This month, WHO acknowledged growing concern about the virus, which can cause potentially fatal respiratory illness, but said it was not a global health emergency because there was no evidence of sustained human-to-human transmission.
There had been 37 lab-confirmed Mers cases in the UAE since late March, all in Abu Dhabi and more than two thirds of them healthcare workers.
Worldwide, Mers has infected at least 536 people and killed 145 since the first case was diagnosed in June 2012. There have been 330 cases, including 59 deaths, worldwide since the end of March.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told the German parliament that. Russia had erected a new wall across Europe.

UK's plans to cut net migration
Under the UK government’s proposals, migrants will have to spend 10 years in the UK before being able to apply for citizenship.
Skilled worker visas will require a university degree, and there will be tighter restrictions on recruitment for jobs with skills shortages.
But what are described as "high-contributing" individuals such as doctors and nurses could be fast-tracked through the system.
Language requirements will be increased for all immigration routes to ensure a higher level of English.
Rules will also be laid out for adult dependants, meaning they will have to demonstrate a basic understanding of the language.
The plans also call for stricter tests for colleges and universities offering places to foreign students and a reduction in the time graduates can remain in the UK after their studies from two years to 18 months.

How has net migration to UK changed?
The figure was broadly flat immediately before the Covid-19 pandemic, standing at 216,000 in the year to June 2018 and 224,000 in the year to June 2019.
It then dropped to an estimated 111,000 in the year to June 2020 when restrictions introduced during the pandemic limited travel and movement.
The total rose to 254,000 in the year to June 2021, followed by steep jumps to 634,000 in the year to June 2022 and 906,000 in the year to June 2023.
The latest available figure of 728,000 for the 12 months to June 2024 suggests levels are starting to decrease.
