Two departments open at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi

Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, the emirate’s flagship hospital, has opened two more departments; the heart and vascular institute and the respiratory and critical care institute.

ABU DHABI // Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi opened two more departments on Sunday in the latest stage of its staggered launch plan.

The heart and vascular institute is initially offering general cardiology and vascular medicine. The respiratory and critical care institute is providing services in pulmonology and bronchoscopy.

It means all five specialist centres of excellence covering digestive disease, eye, heart and vascular disorders, neurological treatment, and respiratory and critical care are now open.

“We are proud to now welcome patients in all of our five centres of excellence which are specialisations designed to address some of the most pressing complex and critical care needs of Abu Dhabi and the UAE,” said Dr Tomislav Mihaljevic, chief of staff and chief of the heart and vascular institute.

“Our mission is to provide the same standard of quality care locally that patients would expect to receive at Cleveland Clinic in the United States thereby reducing their need to travel abroad for complex care.”

Cleveland Clinic in the US, on which the Abu Dhabi hospital has been modelled, is ranked number one in America for heart care.

Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi (CCAD) also announced on Sunday more services have also now become available in the neurological institute including treatments for multiple sclerosis and neuro-rehabilitation.

The hospital on Al Maryah Island opened on March 17 when CCAD officials announced it would be rolling out its services in four stages over ten weeks.

The launch is expected to conclude on May 31 when the emergency department opens.

The hospital, developed by Mubadala Healthcare, a unit of Mubadala Development, is only accepting Thiqa cardholders, who are exclusively Emirati, residents with select Daman enhanced plans, and people who are self-funding.

CCAD will not offer orthopaedics, obstetrics, gynaecology services, or treat patients under the age of 14, with the exception of the eye institute, and will not be a trauma centre.

The 23-acre site has 364 beds, with the option to increase that to 490, including 72 intensive-care unit beds, four post-anaesthesia care units and 26 operating rooms.
