Sustainable award for new Sheikh Khalifa Medical City complex

The new Sheikh Khalifa Medical City complex has been named the Best Sustainable Hospital Project at a Middle East conference.

The award was collected by the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company, or Seha, at this year's Hospital Build and Infrastructure Middle East Exhibition and Congress.

Consisting of three hospitals - covering general health, maternity, and specialty care in obstetrics, gynaecology and paediatrics - the complex will eventually replace the existing Sheikh Khalifa hospital and become the biggest healthcare centre in the country.

At full capacity, the three hospitals are expected to be able to hold 826 patients and cover 300,000 square metres. The project is one of more than a dozen to have been announced in Abu Dhabi.

Six hospitals, a rehabilitation centre, a dialysis centre, four primary healthcare clinics, a special-needs centre and a disease prevention and screening centre were all given approval by the Executive Council to bring health care in the UAE up to international standards.

"Through the use of next-generation technology, the [medical city] development promises to be the one of the most advanced and environmentally conscious healthcare developments in the Middle East," said Saif Al Hameli, the chief officer of Seha's facilities and construction division.
