Abu Dhabi City Municipality has issued warnings to 45 salons and served eight court injunctions after inspection campaigns uncovered illegal, harmful products such as black henna, unsanitary conditions and equipment.
Municipal officials inspected 686 hair and beauty salons and seized 1,045 packs of banned and expired material.
Black henna is banned in the UAE because the chemicals it contains cause skin burns.
In Dubai, salons are fined Dh2,000 for using the product and are shut down if the offence is repeated.
The inspections in the capital were part of campaigns that also covered outlets selling cosmetics and women’s gyms to ensure health and safety compliance.
In most cases verbal warnings were issued to salons for unhygienic conditions and poor maintenance of facilities, as per a municipality statement.
Injunctions were served when prohibited or expired materials were found in the store and judicial authorities would later specify the amount to be paid.
The campaigns reiterated the need to follow procedures including the sterilisation of equipment and ensuring cleanliness of the store.
The municipality will continue to monitor salons to guard against any breach of regulations and safeguard the health of the community, the statement read.
