Abu Dhabi Municipality is conducting a three-week campaign to inspect hygiene standards at men's hairdressing salons and women's beauty parlours.
So far, inspectors have called at 120 premises and issued an unspecified number of warnings for poor standards of cleanliness.
Samples were taken from make-up, scissors and sterilisation equipment.
The municipality also said it was in discussions with the Ministry of Health to offer tests against disease for all salon employees every six months. Any violations can be reported by calling 993.
