ABU DHABI // The executive director of a private hospital in Abu Dhabi has been dismissed after an investigation into a birth that left a baby with brain damage, officials said yesterday. The Health Authority-Abu Dhabi said the director allowed an unlicensed doctor to deliver the baby. The doctor had already been banned from practising in Abu Dhabi because of numerous medical mistakes, according to the authority.
The state news agency, WAM, reported that the baby suffered from cerebral palsy, and that the executive director and a female doctor would stand trial. The licence of the executive director has been withdrawn and he will undergo a professional assessment, officials said. The hospital will be on probation for three months while it makes necessary changes and will be closed for two months if the situation is not remedied, although it was unclear what other steps the hospital would be required to take.
Officials would not release the name of the hospital, the doctor or executive director, saying only that the hospital was one of the major private facilities in Abu Dhabi. Health authority officials declined to comment. Ahalia Hospital, Al Noor Hospital, Hopital Franco-Emirien, Lifeline Hospital and NMC Specialty Hospitals all say they were not involved. amcmeans@thenational.ae
