Dubai Ambulance responded to almost 500 emergencies involving people who were either sick or injured over New Year's Eve.

Paramedics dealt with 493 cases and treated 542 patients in the 16-hour period from 2pm on Thursday to 6am on Friday.

Khalifa bin Dary, executive director of Dubai Ambulance Services Corporation, said the majority of the reports were for simple and moderate cases, while 25 people were severely injured.

Security and health safety measures in Dubai were tightened in preparation for New Year's Eve celebrations on Thursday.

Thousands of police officers ensured the safety of revellers and made sure coronavirus safety regulations were observed.

About 122 ambulance stations were set up across the emirate and 78 emergency stations were established near popular areas.

Another 200 ambulances were parked at celebration sites with about 700 paramedics and other medical staff on duty.

Ambulances and medical stations were routinely disinfected to ensure compliance with Covid-19 measures.

Dubai Health Authority also established three field hospitals to cater to any injuries throughout the evening.

About 50 doctors and nurses were on call, with 10 support staff members ready to help.
