Cosmetic treatment a growing allure to men

For years, there has been a steady increase in the number of men wanting treatment as they are becoming more educated on cosmetic surgery or see more of their friends having enhancements.

DUBAI // Men are making up a bigger proportion of plastic surgery clientele in their efforts to maintain a youthful appearance, surgeons say.

But men often wanted more discreet ways to improve their looks than women, said Dr Maurizio Viel and Dr Roberto Viel of the London Centre for Aesthetic Surgery in Dubai. The two men are brothers.

“They [men] may not seek dramatic changes in terms of non-surgical procedures as women do,” said Roberto.

“They do more Botox these days but they want a natural look to refresh the face, as many men here work long hours.”

For years, the siblings have been providing cosmetic treatment to a steadily growing number of men, who are becoming more knowledgeable about cosmetic surgery or see more of their friends having such enhancements.

Men commonly ask for non-invasive procedures, such as Botox, for a youthful appearance, or surgical procedures to combat common fat deposit areas, such as the stomach.

“In terms of surgical procedures, we see more and more men turning to liposuction around the abdomen and chest area,” said Dr Roberto.

Dr Luiz Toledo, director of the Emirates Plastic Surgery Society, said the number of men undergoing cosmetic treatment at his clinic had increased.

“In 2013, the percentage of women to men who came for consultation was 86 per cent to 14 per cent, but the percentage who actually underwent surgery was 94 per cent to six per cent,” he said.

“In 2015, it was 84 per cent to 16 per cent who came for consultation and 86 per cent to 14 per cent who undergone surgery.”

Male professionals between 31 and 40 years old were the most likely to seek plastic surgery, said Dr Toledo.
