The UAE recorded 1,973 new Covid-19 cases and two further deaths in the past 24 hours.

Active cases in the country now number 16,616 while the death toll rose to 1,567.

Another 1,744 people recovered from the virus, with the total number of recoveries now at 488,664.

On Friday, the Ministry of Health and Prevention said 202,068 people were tested for Covid-19 over the previous 24-hour period.

A total of 42,698,466 tests have been carried out in the UAE since the beginning of the outbreak.

The UAE passed the milestone of 10 million vaccine doses administered.

The Emirates hit the milestone on Thursday after 101,239 more people received a shot against the disease in the previous 24 hours.

Commenting on the achievement, the Minister of Health and Prevention highlighted the importance of choosing to vaccinate "to ensure recovery from the pandemic".

More than half the UAE population have now been vaccinated, which has helped to bring new cases down from a high of almost 4,000 a day in January to about 2,000 in recent weeks.

About 5.1 million people have received their first dose of a vaccine, while more than 3.8 million people are fully inoculated.
