Coronavirus: Iraqi officials praise UAE for sending medical aid

Baghdad officials praised the UAE's for sending medical aid to Iraq to help the country fight the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Emirates flew six tonnes of medical supplies to Iraqi Kurdistan, state news agency Wam reported on Friday. The aid will help about 6,000 medical professionals to contain the outbreak.

Dr Osama Al Rifai, head of the Arab Department at the Iraqi Foreign Ministry, welcomed the aid plane at Baghdad International Airport. He said the gesture showed the depth of the historical relations binding the two countries.

"The people and government of Iraq will remain grateful to the UAE for their commitment to deliver medical aid to Iraq under the tough circumstances the entire world is going through," Mr Al Rifai was quoted saying by Wam.

A number of officials from the Iraqi Ministry of Health and other departments welcomed the UAE plane, which carried medical supplies and screening devices.

The UAE has also been providing Covid-19 medical supplies to other countries in the region. On Saturday, the Emirates sent an aid plane carrying 16 tonnes of urgent medical supplies to Iran.

The aid will help about 16,000 medical professionals fight the outbreak.

This is not the first time the UAE delivered medical aid to Iran during the coronavirus pandemic – the Emirates has sent four aid planes to Iran since March.

Iran is the worst affected country in the Middle East, recording more than 220,000 Covid-19 cases and 10,300 deaths.

"The UAE's efforts to operate numerous emergency medical flights to assist Iran's medical sector reflect the authenticity of the UAE's humanitarian approach and the spirit of tolerance and solidarity embedded in UAE policies," said UAE Ambassador to Iran Saif Al Zaabi.

"The UAE has long stood with the leadership and peoples of other countries in difficult times, supporting them and helping save their lives without regard to any other considerations.

"The UAE hopes that these supplies will enhance the capacity of medical staff in Iran and provide them with greater protection."

The UAE is close to having sent 1,000 tonnes of medical aid abroad as part of its efforts to assist countries fighting the coronavirus outbreak.

So far, the Emirates has sent 974 tonnes of supplies to 68 countries in South America, Asia, Africa and Europe.

Who is Mohammed Al Halbousi?

The new speaker of Iraq’s parliament Mohammed Al Halbousi is the youngest person ever to serve in the role.

The 37-year-old was born in Al Garmah in Anbar and studied civil engineering in Baghdad before going into business. His development company Al Hadeed undertook reconstruction contracts rebuilding parts of Fallujah’s infrastructure.

He entered parliament in 2014 and served as a member of the human rights and finance committees until 2017. In August last year he was appointed governor of Anbar, a role in which he has struggled to secure funding to provide services in the war-damaged province and to secure the withdrawal of Shia militias. He relinquished the post when he was sworn in as a member of parliament on September 3.

He is a member of the Al Hal Sunni-based political party and the Sunni-led Coalition of Iraqi Forces, which is Iraq’s largest Sunni alliance with 37 seats from the May 12 election.

He maintains good relations with former Prime Minister Nouri Al Maliki’s State of Law Coaliton, Hadi Al Amiri’s Badr Organisation and Iranian officials.

Tax authority targets shisha levy evasion

The Federal Tax Authority will track shisha imports with electronic markers to protect customers and ensure levies have been paid.

Khalid Ali Al Bustani, director of the tax authority, on Sunday said the move is to "prevent tax evasion and support the authority’s tax collection efforts".

The scheme’s first phase, which came into effect on 1st January, 2019, covers all types of imported and domestically produced and distributed cigarettes. As of May 1, importing any type of cigarettes without the digital marks will be prohibited.

He said the latest phase will see imported and locally produced shisha tobacco tracked by the final quarter of this year.

"The FTA also maintains ongoing communication with concerned companies, to help them adapt their systems to meet our requirements and coordinate between all parties involved," he said.

As with cigarettes, shisha was hit with a 100 per cent tax in October 2017, though manufacturers and cafes absorbed some of the costs to prevent prices doubling.

Islamophobia definition

A widely accepted definition was made by the All Party Parliamentary Group on British Muslims in 2019: “Islamophobia is rooted in racism and is a type of racism that targets expressions of Muslimness or perceived Muslimness.” It further defines it as “inciting hatred or violence against Muslims”.
