Coronavirus: healthcare provider launches Covid-19 support group for Dubai patients

A major UAE healthcare provider has launched a support group to help patients overcome the mental and physical toll of battling Covid-19.

The service from Aster Hospitals UAE - part of the Aster DM Healthcare network of medical facilities in the Emirates - is aimed at patients facing up to the challenges of being placed in isolation away from family and friends and sets out to aid their rehabilitation and provide mental health support when needed.

The Cosmos initiative - which stands for ‘circle of strength, master of self - will offer a platform to patients being treated at Aster hospitals to take part in education sessions and stay connected to doctors, dietitians and family members through online applications.

The group was launched at an event held at Aster Hospital, in Al Qusais, Dubai, attended by recovered Covid-19 patients.

The Cosmos group will be in place at the four Aster Hospitals in Dubai, in Mankhool, Al Qusais, Jebel Ali and Muhaisnah.

A dedicated team will be tasked with raising the spirits of patients recovering in isolation, helping them manage feelings of anxiety, depression and loneliness, and will offer a raft of support services including physical therapy and nutrition advice as well as counselling after patients have been given the all-clear and discharged.

“We have seen our patients go through various levels of mental stress - anxiety, fear, loneliness and depression brought about by separation from families and loved ones, and uncertainty regarding the outcome from this disease," said Dr Sherbaz Bichu, Chief executive of Aster Hospitals UAE, who launched the group.

"Many of them are expats with families back in their home country who are even otherwise constantly worried. For them, sustained motivation and support in channeling their emotional stress is a key factor in the holistic recovery process.

"Patients who have undergone long periods of intensive care often require psychological support and nutritional diet to regain strength and psychological normality. Cosmos is our effort to ensure that our patients return home completely healed.”

Dr Malathi Arshanapalai, group chief medical and quality officer at Aster DM Healthcare, attended the launch session.

"It is a truly humbling experience to see our recovered patients attend this session and share their journey with Aster Hospitals," said Dr Arshanapalai.

"It gives me immense pleasure that we are able to go beyond medical treatment and support our patients in their holistic recovery."

The Cosmos group will offer education sessions, a chance to converse with others and interactive games in designated lobbies with the Covid-19 area of hospitals.

Heavily-sugared soft drinks slip through the tax net

Some popular drinks with high levels of sugar and caffeine have slipped through the fizz drink tax loophole, as they are not carbonated or classed as an energy drink.

Arizona Iced Tea with lemon is one of those beverages, with one 240 millilitre serving offering up 23 grams of sugar - about six teaspoons.

A 680ml can of Arizona Iced Tea costs just Dh6.

Most sports drinks sold in supermarkets were found to contain, on average, five teaspoons of sugar in a 500ml bottle.

Ten tax points to be aware of in 2026

1. Domestic VAT refund amendments: request your refund within five years

If a business does not apply for the refund on time, they lose their credit.

2. E-invoicing in the UAE

Businesses should continue preparing for the implementation of e-invoicing in the UAE, with 2026 a preparation and transition period ahead of phased mandatory adoption.

3. More tax audits

Tax authorities are increasingly using data already available across multiple filings to identify audit risks.

4. More beneficial VAT and excise tax penalty regime

Tax disputes are expected to become more frequent and more structured, with clearer administrative objection and appeal processes. The UAE has adopted a new penalty regime for VAT and excise disputes, which now mirrors the penalty regime for corporate tax.

5. Greater emphasis on statutory audit

There is a greater need for the accuracy of financial statements. The International Financial Reporting Standards standards need to be strictly adhered to and, as a result, the quality of the audits will need to increase.

6. Further transfer pricing enforcement

Transfer pricing enforcement, which refers to the practice of establishing prices for internal transactions between related entities, is expected to broaden in scope. The UAE will shortly open the possibility to negotiate advance pricing agreements, or essentially rulings for transfer pricing purposes.

7. Limited time periods for audits

Recent amendments also introduce a default five-year limitation period for tax audits and assessments, subject to specific statutory exceptions. While the standard audit and assessment period is five years, this may be extended to up to 15 years in cases involving fraud or tax evasion.

8. Pillar 2 implementation

Many multinational groups will begin to feel the practical effect of the Domestic Minimum Top-Up Tax (DMTT), the UAE's implementation of the OECD’s global minimum tax under Pillar 2. While the rules apply for financial years starting on or after January 1, 2025, it is 2026 that marks the transition to an operational phase.

9. Reduced compliance obligations for imported goods and services

Businesses that apply the reverse-charge mechanism for VAT purposes in the UAE may benefit from reduced compliance obligations.

10. Substance and CbC reporting focus

Tax authorities are expected to continue strengthening the enforcement of economic substance and Country-by-Country (CbC) reporting frameworks. In the UAE, these regimes are increasingly being used as risk-assessment tools, providing tax authorities with a comprehensive view of multinational groups’ global footprints and enabling them to assess whether profits are aligned with real economic activity.

If you had all the money in the world, what’s the one sneaker you would buy or create?

“There are a few shoes that have ‘grail’ status for me. But the one I have always wanted is the Nike x Patta x Parra Air Max 1 - Cherrywood. To get a pair in my size brand new is would cost me between Dh8,000 and Dh 10,000.” Jack Brett

“If I had all the money, I would approach Nike and ask them to do my own Air Force 1, that’s one of my dreams.” Yaseen Benchouche

“There’s nothing out there yet that I’d pay an insane amount for, but I’d love to create my own shoe with Tinker Hatfield and Jordan.” Joshua Cox

“I think I’d buy a defunct footwear brand; I’d like the challenge of reinterpreting a brand’s history and changing options.” Kris Balerite

Evacuations to France hit by controversy
