An Abu Dhabi grocery store has been shut down indefinitely after a string of food safety breaches.

Top Save More LLC was hit with five fines by authorities between June and December for flouting regulations but failed to raise its standards, despite warnings.

Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority said the shop’s unsafe practices were a threat to the health of its customers.

The authority said the premises would remain closed until owners addressed its concerns.

The store was forced to shut its doors on Monday because of a host of health code breaches, including leaving piles of food stacked haphazardly in refrigerators and selling fish and poultry from unknown sources.

Its owners also failed to renew its commercial licence.

“The closure is because the store did not commit to food safety standards and did not meet the health standards of a food facility which could have affected the safety of the foodstuff and consumers’ health,” the authority said in a statement.

Members of the public are urged to report any food safety concerns to authorities by calling the free number 800 555.
