DUBAI // When it started in 2003, the TwinsPlus Arabia support group began with two mothers of twins.
Today, the group has 1,000 parents, covering more than 45 nationalities, who have had multiple births – either naturally, by IVF, through surrogates or adoption.
Expatriates said the group offered a lifeline to the growing number of families with multiples in the UAE.
Alia Chabbani Berro learnt she was expecting a multiple birth when her firstborn was two months. Her family now includes four-month-old twins.
“It was both a shock and something so incredible that from then on I did have roller-coaster feelings,” said the 30-year-old .
“A friend told me about this group and, for a whole day, I was reading other mums’ stories, questions and advice.”
Sarah Laventure, who has two-year-old twin girls, described the group as “a great forum of like-minded mums”.
“When I was pregnant I used the group to seek advice on everything from sleeping arrangements to double buggies to how you actually get through the first few months,” said the 33-year-old Australian.
“I’ve bought and sold some items on the site that are specific to twins and met some fantastic friends through the site as well.”
Briton Alexandra Gunn arrived in Dubai with a 19-month-old daughter and two months later became pregnant with twins.
“The tears shed for the despair multiples bring are different, the exhaustion is inexplicable. But the honour and joy of watching two babies grow up together is something only a multiple mum will understand, and that can only be shared with people within the group,” said the 41-year-old.
German Rebecca Bear gave birth to twin boys this month.
The 31-year-old was excited to find a forum where she could reach out to other mothers of multiples.
“I have made some great connections with fellow mums and I’m looking forward for our little ones to grow up together.”
The support group is also opening to Emiratis.
