SHARJAH // Urgent action is needed from Arab leaders and officials to put an end to the Syrian refugee crisis, according to Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, the wife of Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, the Ruler of Sharjah.
Sheikha Jawaher, who is also a UNHCR eminent advocate for refugee children, said more than four million refugees needed support in neighbouring countries.
“The only solution to the crisis of Syrian refugees lies in collaborative efforts by the international community,” she said.
“They have lost their lives and the lives of their loved ones. Societies and leaders should cooperate and focus on a unified approach so we can reach a speedy resolution to this crisis.”
The migration of Syrian and Iraqi refugees to nearby countries in search of safety, food and shelter was a particular priority, she said.
She called on Arab leaders to work together to support refugees, as well as the countries they have fled to.
Refugees should be kept in countries that border their home countries as that would help them to take part in reconstruction once there is peace, she said.
“Many Syrian refugees were forced to migrate to Europe because there is not enough support for them in neighbouring countries.”
“The UAE has always been at the forefront of humanitarian aid and has always stood by the oppressed and people in need by providing a decent life for them, whether in their own countries, or on its territories, by offering them opportunities to work and live,” she said.
