Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, met with Germany's foreign minister in Abu Dhabi on Sunday.
Heiko Maas was in the UAE capital as part of a tour of the Middle East aimed at co-ordinating with partners in the region over Iranian tensions.
At Al Shati Palace, Sheikh Mohamed and Mr Maas discussed the relationship between the UAE and Germany as well as means to boost co-operation in the fields of culture, education and investment.
They also exchanged views on current developments in the region and the need for stability.
The meeting with Sheikh Mohamed followed a press conference held by Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation, and the German diplomat in which the pair addressed the "sabotage attack" on four vessels off the coast of Fujairah last month.
Sheikh Abdullah said the attack was not just targeting the Emirates but all countries whose ships were struck, referring to Saudi Arabia and Norway.
Mr Maas is due to head to Iran on Monday. His trip to the UAE followed a stop in Iraq on Saturday where he raised the need for Germany to take an active role in mediation and not simply urge increased diplomatic efforts.
