Government officials plan to conduct 60,000 inspections in the UAE to ensure that companies implement the midday break for labourers working under direct sunlight.

The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation said violations will be reported directly from the worksite with an electronic notice, documented with pictures through a smart application.

Ten thousand inspections will be carried out in Dubai alone, the ministry said, according to Aletihad, the Arabic-language sister newspaper of The National.

Offenders could receive fines ranging from Dh5,000 to Dh50,000 for every worker found to be working during midday break, said Maher Owaid, assistant undersecretary for inspections at the ministry.

Daily awareness campaigns will take place during the holy month to ensure that companies respect the midday break, which is in effect from June 15 to September 15 and lasts from 12.30pm to 3pm.

Companies are also required by law to provide the workers with shade and water.
