DUBAI // Joint international efforts are required to meet unprecedented humanitarian aid needs, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, said on Sunday.
His comments came amid the launch of a United Nations report at Dubai’s International Humanitarian City on filling a US$15 million (Dh55m) funding gap for humanitarian aid.
“In order to bridge the gap it is necessary to consolidate international efforts, improve efficiency of humanitarian work, involve private sector and establish good governance in the countries that need help,” Sheikh Mohammed said.
The report was launched by UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon, who said urgent action was needed amid what he called an “age of mega crises”.
Princess Haya bint Al Hussein, chairwoman of International Humanitarian City and wife of Sheikh Mohammed, said that in the last decade conflicts and disasters on a scale similar to the Second World War had displaced 50 million people.
“This is in addition to the millions of people who suffer poverty, unemployment and diseases due to lack of development,” she said.
“We need higher principles around which world countries – their governments and their private sectors – can come together.”
Mr Ban praised the UAE’s as the largest aid donor in the world based on GDP, with 1.26 per cent devoted to aid.
This compares with many developed countries failing to hit even the 0.7 per cent target set out 40 years ago.
The launch of the UN report in Dubai came as the UAE continued to establish itself as a global humanitarian capital, said Sheikh Mohammed.
“This move shows that the international community has confidence in our state, and its international humanitarian efforts in particular,” he said.
“Joint international humanitarian action should be boosted to bridge the global shortfall in humanitarian assistance by improving the efficiency of humanitarian work, involving the private sector and establishing good governance in countries in need of assistance.”
Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai, Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi, Minister of International Cooperation and Development, and Reem Al Hashimy, Minister of State and chairwoman of Dubai Cares, were among those who attended the event.

Tips for used car buyers

The smuggler
Eldarir had arrived at JFK in January 2020 with three suitcases, containing goods he valued at $300, when he was directed to a search area.
Officers found 41 gold artefacts among the bags, including amulets from a funerary set which prepared the deceased for the afterlife.
Also found was a cartouche of a Ptolemaic king on a relief that was originally part of a royal building or temple.
The largest single group of items found in Eldarir’s cases were 400 shabtis, or figurines.
Khouli conviction
Khouli smuggled items into the US by making false declarations to customs about the country of origin and value of the items.
According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he provided “false provenances which stated that [two] Egyptian antiquities were part of a collection assembled by Khouli's father in Israel in the 1960s” when in fact “Khouli acquired the Egyptian antiquities from other dealers”.
He was sentenced to one year of probation, six months of home confinement and 200 hours of community service in 2012 after admitting buying and smuggling Egyptian antiquities, including coffins, funerary boats and limestone figures.
