Al Ain City Municipality has begun offering services in Braille with plans to roll out the inclusive system to other government offices “in the near future”.

The Braille option means that people with visual impairments living in the Eastern region of the capital will no longer have to rely on the help of others to read documents and carry out official procedures.

Matar Al Nuaimi, general manager of Al Ain City Municipality, called for Braille to be introduced as part of efforts to improve community services for residents. The move also comes as part of a general push from the UAE Government to increase accessibility for people with disabilities.

Municipality workers received training on how to use the specialised Braille printer and how to best serve people with visual impairments.

The first phase of the roll out involves printing ownership agreement policies, tenancy contracts, guides and questionnaires in Braille, with plans to extend the option to other services.

The municipality said it also caters to those who are hard of hearing by training employees in sign language and has ensured all its centres are accessible to people who use wheelchairs.
