A reputation for doing good but not for asking questions

ABU DHABI // In the past three years of his term, Obaid Rekad has only asked one question of the Government.

The Umm Al Quwain member asked the Minister of Education, Humaid Al Qatami, to replace the poor buildings at Al Raifah primary and secondary school in his home emirate.

Otherwise, Mr Rekad has had little activity in the council’s public sessions.

As a retired police officer, he was vocal in his support for the new national military service law.

“Of course this is a great step; everyone wants to serve their country,” he said.

Mr Rekad is a member of the health, labour, and social affairs committee, and deputy head of the interior and defence committee.

Sara Al Shamsi, a resident of Umm Al Quwain, confirmed Mr Rekad’s claim that all those in the emirate knew him.

“He is known to do good. I did not vote during the elections but others did for him,” Ms Al Shamsi said.

She said although she did not know him personally he had a good reputation across the emirate.
