SHARJAH // Sixty-five candidates, including 13 women, completed their registration in Sharjah to compete for three seats on the FNC.

Fourteen members registered on Thursday, including four women, bringing women’s participation to 20 per cent in the emirate.

The first candidate to register in Sharjah was Mariam Al Noaimi who, according to FNC committee in Sharjah, started her registration process at 8.01am.

The last candidate to complete his registration, on the final day, was Dr Ahmed Al Moaini, director of groundwater research at the Environment Agency in Abu Dhabi, at 2.30pm.

On the first day in Sharjah, 22 individuals completed their registration, which included three women and a blind man. The second day, eight applied, including one woman. On Tuesday, four completed their registration, including one woman, while on Wednesday, 17 successfully registered, four of them women.

Six candidates will represent Sharjah in the FNC, three of them will be elected, while three would be appointed by Sharjah’s Ruler, Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi.

In Fujairah, 38 candidates came forward over the course of the week, with five women – out of a total of seven – registering on the final day. “The last day of registration had marked the registration of five women, which is considered a huge number compared to the past few days of elections,” said Brig Mohammed Al Kaabi, chairman of the Fujairah Elections Committee. The youngest person to register in the emirate was 26, Mr Al Kaabi said.

The breakdown was similar in Ras Al Khaimah, with five of the emirate’s 42 candidates women.

All in all, the registration process went according to plan, said Hamad Awad, a member of the RAK Elections Committee. “The operation went smoothly and some of the candidates who came during the first days of registration missing some documents had returned and completed their registration,” he said.

In Ajman, 23 candidates registered, four of whom were women. In Umm Al Quwain, 20 candidates applied, including three women.
