A programme allowing inmates in Fujairah’s prisons to video chat with their loved ones was launched by police on Sunday.
Police said they hoped the programme would help lift the inmates’ spirits and allow them to integrate into family life more easily upon their release.
“The initiative will reflect positively on the inmate’s condition and their happiness levels and also help them communicate with their families around the world,” said Maj Gen Mohammad Al Kaabi, chief of Fujairah Police.
The visual electronic system is licensed by the country’s telecommunication companies and has been installed on dedicated iPads available to inmates at the facilities.
Last April, a similar programme was installed at Sharjah's penal institutions. Dedicated computers were installed in nine locations throughout the emirate where people with imprisoned family members could book time to speak with them.
