Footnotes: Apostrophe fix now

No misplaced punctuation mark or letter is safe in the great typo hunt.

You may think signage in the UAE is littered with typos, but we are not alone in this - mispellings show up on signs around the world. While most people may find these errors funny rather than frustrating, two dedicated Americans took it upon themselves to correct typos during a three-month trip across the US. Jeff Deck and Benjamin D Herson, both 30 and brandishing markers and whiteout, drove through America in the spring of 2008, correcting typos in their path.

Deck, a magazine editor, and Herson, a bookseller, have chronicled their mission in a book entitled The Great Typo Hunt, published earlier this month. Calling themselves the "Typo Eradication Advancement League", Deck and Herson targeted signs outside parks, petrol stations and shops. In Arizona, they removed a gratuitous apostrophe from a sign reminding tourists to bring their "camera's". In Atlanta, they edited a sign advertising a "souviner" of the city.

Rather than viewing themselves as over-zealous grammar vigilantes, Deck and Herson argue they are actually helping vendors. In an interview with Reuters, Deck explained: "If you put a bunch of typos out for the world to see, people might draw conclusions about attention to detail in other matters." The friends were also careful to ensure their editing was lawful, seeking out the permission of the signs' owners to make the needed changes. Deck and Herson found that some shopkeepers were grateful, while other incorrect spellers were not so appreciative - the pair were arrested by Arizona police for fixing bad grammar in an official sign at the Grand Canyon. A federal judge fined them Dh11,000 and banned them from speaking publicly about fixing typos for a year, a period that expired in August last year.

That wasn't the kind of federal correction they were hoping for.

Financial considerations before buying a property

Buyers should try to pay as much in cash as possible for a property, limiting the mortgage value to as little as they can afford. This means they not only pay less in interest but their monthly costs are also reduced. Ideally, the monthly mortgage payment should not exceed 20 per cent of the purchaser’s total household income, says Carol Glynn, founder of Conscious Finance Coaching.

“If it’s a rental property, plan for the property to have periods when it does not have a tenant. Ensure you have enough cash set aside to pay the mortgage and other costs during these periods, ideally at least six months,” she says.

Also, shop around for the best mortgage interest rate. Understand the terms and conditions, especially what happens after any introductory periods, Ms Glynn adds.

Using a good mortgage broker is worth the investment to obtain the best rate available for a buyer’s needs and circumstances. A good mortgage broker will help the buyer understand the terms and conditions of the mortgage and make the purchasing process efficient and easier.
