Fireworks round off UAE National Day celebrations – in pictures

Colourful display brings familiarity to unprecedented year

The annual fireworks display to celebrate the UAE's National Day brought a familiar comfort in the midst of an unprecedented year to Emiratis and residents across the country.

A full day of celebrations was wrapped up with spectacular firework displays in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

Streets were not as busy as usual due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Health authorities had called on residents and Emiratis to stay home and watch the fireworks from their windows or balconies to avoid gatherings.

The firework display along Abu Dhabi Corniche, which began at 9.25pm, was broadcast live on Abu Dhabi TV, Emarat TV and on @UAE_Barq's instagram to allow those without a sea view an opportunity to watch the show.

Earlier, the country's annual National Day show was held among Abu Dhabi's mangroves on Al Jubail Island.

To prevent gatherings, the performance was closed to the public but was attended by the country's rulers.

The spectacular show delivered a message of hope and ambition in the face of challenges.

A giant, rotating cube was the centrepiece of the artistic performance that used a combination of vivid projections, rousing music, fireworks and human performance to pay tribute to the country's origins and celebrate how far it has come.
