SHARJAH // A large fire this morning gutted a garbage dumping site owned by the Sharjah municipality, but no one was injured.
The blaze in the Sharjah industrial area started around 10am, and it took about two hours for firefighters to bring it under control, officials said.
Thick flames could be seen as far away as Al Qusais in Dubai and the Ajman industrial area. Several roads in the neighbourhood around the dumping site were also closed to allow firefighters access to the blaze
"There were no deaths or injuries reported," said Col Waheed al Serkal, the director general of Sharjah Civil Defence. "Firefighters also managed to stop the spread of fire to the neighbouring factories that include a fertilizers and cement factory."
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
