ABU DHABI // Two large storage facilities that contained stationary and food products were destroyed after a fire erupted in the Abu Dhabi Ports warehouse district Friday afternoon.
Lt. Col. Mohammed Abdul Jalil Al Ansari, director general of Civil Defence in Abu Dhabi, said the fire was reported to the operations centre at 11:15am. By about 1:30pm, crews from Zayed Port, Mussafah, Metropolitan, Al Wathba and Al Bateen, as well as rapid intervention teams in Al Falah, had still been working to extinguish the blaze in cooperation with Abu Dhabi Distribution Company.
One police helicopter hovered over the scene as firefighters deployed a crane to douse water through the thick smoke. The road, near the intersection of 17th and 12th Street, behind the Grand Stores, was temporarily blocked to traffic by police. A tow truck was seen moving a Rani Refreshments transportation vehicle away from the fire.
The teams were able to contain and put out the fire preventing it from spreading to neighbouring warehouses, according to Security Media.
Lt Col Al Ansari called on commercial and industrial facility owners to comply with safety requirements in warehouses in order to prevent fire accidents and to preserve life and property.
An investigation is still underway to determine the cause of the blaze. No one was injured in the fire.
