Event honouring Sheikh Zayed celebrates his achievements

People gathered at Emirates Palace to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the death of the founder of the UAE.

ABU DHABI // The Department of Presidential Affairs hosted “Ten Years of Loyalty”, at Emirates Palace to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the passing of Sheikh Zayed, highlighting his humanitarian achievements and the sense of unity he instilled in the nation.

The event featured artists, poets and cultural figures recalling the late Founder’s contribution to the UAE.

“This event would be an ideal platform to let the Emirati culture of giving and sharing find new meanings as the leaders set an example to the younger generation by caring for those less privileged around the globe,” said Dr Moubarak Al Ahbabi, chairman of the Department of President’s Affairs in Abu Dhabi.

He said it was through Sheikh Zayed’s character that the UAE was able to pursue cross-cultural understanding and bring nations together.

“Our father led us to become united in not only who we are, but how we are towards each other and how we feel. To share a united set of morals to guide us towards progress. For us to cherish our presence in the time it took for us to become a nation, we must embody the morals established by our forefathers.”

The opening speech was followed by the performance artist Shaima Almoghery, who used sand to draw on a screen that was projected on to a 20-metre backdrop of Sheikh Zayed mosque.

The poets Safa and Marwa expressed their appreciation and respect for Sheikh Zayed’s personality. Marwa said: “Zayed is [who] we have to thank for everything we have today, men like him make the nation.”

Several other renowned poets, including Rashed Al Rumaithi, Rashed Sharar and Saif Al Mansoury, also recited poetry honouring Sheikh Zayed. Among the attendees was Prince Salman bin Hamad, Crown Prince of Bahrain.
