DUBAI // Nearly 4,000 Emirati families in the emirate will soon have recycling bins in their homes, under a new initiative that will be rolled out next month.
The 3,700 families living in three communities will each receive two bins to separate their household waste from March 1, Dubai Municipality officials announced this morning.
"Waste management and recycling are the key issues of the developed cities," said Mr Abdulmajeed Saifaie, director of the emirate's waste management department. "Approximately 2.8 kg of waste is being generated per person on a daily basis in Dubai."
Ms Saifaie said the initiative was aimed at instilling a culture of recycling among UAE national and expatriate residents.
The project, "My city...my environment," is initially being implemented in Al Mizhar 1, Al Mizhar 2 and Nadd Al Hammar - which are all part of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Housing Establishment - under a year-long trial period. After that, it could be expanded to every home in Dubai.
The 3,700 families that will receive the bins are already being educated on the need to segregate household waste into food and non-food items, officials said.

Ismail Matar
The Al Wahda forward is revered by teammates and a key contributor to the squad. At 35, his best days are behind him, but Matar is incredibly experienced and an example to his colleagues. His ability to cope with tournament football is a concern, though, despite Matar beginning the season well. Not a like-for-like replacement, although the system could be adjusted to suit.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told the German parliament that. Russia had erected a new wall across Europe.
"It's not a Berlin Wall -- it is a Wall in central Europe between freedom and bondage and this Wall is growing bigger with every bomb" dropped on Ukraine, Zelenskyy told MPs.
Mr Zelenskyy was applauded by MPs in the Bundestag as he addressed Chancellor Olaf Scholz directly.
"Dear Mr Scholz, tear down this Wall," he said, evoking US President Ronald Reagan's 1987 appeal to Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev at Berlin's Brandenburg Gate.
